Visualization is a powerful tool to solve complex problems. By nature, complex problems are hard to see, hard to express and hard to solve. So capturing the essence, the forces of the problem puts it in a form we can begin to solve.
This is a visualization I use to help organizations come together to discuss how their management model could be causing performance problems.
Every day, service reps sit down in a call centre. Technicians head out on the road to their first job. Their day, their work entirely structured and disciplined for maximum productivity. Geared like a machine.
In the same organizations, managers, support staff and analysts start work with much less structure and process, if any. An open-ended, often painful mix of meetings and work that despite best efforts, doesn't always get done.
The pain and complexity on the left side of the visual always resonates with people. And then we explore the right side. A better, easier world and how to get there.
